About Marcia

I am a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists, and I am a member of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta.  I completed a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have also completed the following programs/trainings:

  • Circle of Security Parenting Facilitator Training

  • Child Parent Relationship Training Parent Program

  • Incredible Years School Age BASIC Parenting Group Leader Training

  • Incredible Years Parent and Babies Program Group Leader Training

I began providing counselling with children and parents more than 20 years ago. My counselling approach is guided by attachment theory and the neurobiological underpinnings of connection. This is an evidence-based model that helps us understand how important relationships, especially the parent-child relationship, lays the groundwork for human development and healthy functioning across various domains of life.  It has been studied for decades. I am also grounded in child development and have completed trainings in play therapy.

Attachment theory uses what is known as a behavioral translation approach.  This means that children have needs and their behavior is how they communicate these needs.  In our work together, we will:

  • Be curious and try and understand how your child’s behavior may be an attempt to manage unmet needs or is a reaction to distress

  • Increase understanding of your child’s emotional world and how you can support your child’s ability to successfully manage emotions

  • Enhance your connection with your child and work to help both you and your child self-regulate

  • Identify how to repair the parent-child relationship when an empathic break occurs

My counselling style is gentle and sensitive where I am able to quickly connect with parents and convey a feeling of being understood regarding the challenges of parenthood.  I work to create a safe and trusting experience where clients sense I am attuned to them, their feelings, and the difficulties they are having.  They will also sense my passion for helping families be healthy and vibrant. The blend of deep knowledge of attachment theory and a gentle, caring relationship provides opportunity for parents to heal, learn, and ultimately move towards thriving as a parent.

In addition to my clinical practice, I have provided clinical education for 13 years to Addiction and Mental Health staff within Alberta Health Services (AHS). This has provided me with the opportunity to research, create, and facilitate various workshops and presentations where I strive to communicate in an engaging and thoughtful manner.  I have also presented at numerous conferences for both the general public and various professional audiences, as well as being a keynote speaker.
